Latest Sport News: Alonso wins F1 British Grand Prix at Silverstone

The British Formula 1 Grand Prix at Silverstone has been won by Fernando Alonso with Sebastian Vettel finishing in 2^nd place and Mark Webber finishing in 3^rdplace. Lewis Hamilton eventually finished 4^th after a thrilling last lap duel with Filipe Massa. Unfortunately, Jenson Button was forced to retire following a problem with his final pit stop. He set off to rejoin the race but was missing a wheel nut and was forced to stop in the pit exit.

It was Alonso’s first win of the season and came as a result of a pit stop problem for Sebastian Vettel. Red Bull boss, Christian Horner, made a slightly controversial decision by telling Webber to keep his race position which enabled Vettel to maintain 2^nd place.

The Red Bull’s seemed to take control of the race early with half the track being wet and the other half dry but as the track began to dry out it all changed and Alonso closed in on Hamilton and passed him. Eventually Alonso managed to pass Vettel in the pits and took the lead following a pit stop problem for Vettel.

Sebastian Vettel is now leading the drivers championship with 204 points, Mark Webber is 2^nd with 124 points and Ferdinand Alonso is 3^rd with 112 points. Both Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button have 109 points each and are placed 4^th and 5^th respectively.

Latest Sport News: 25 year old Spaniard, Rafael Nadal, has beaten Roger Federer by 7-5, 7-6, 5-7, 6-1 in a thrilling match which lasted 3 hours and 39 minutes and he has now won 10 Grand Slam titles.

The win today was his 6^th win at Roland Garros and he has now equalled Bjorn Borg’s previously held record of 6 wins of the French Open.

The women’s final was won yesterday by Na Li from China who beat Francesca Schiravone in straight sets by 6-4, 7-6. 29 year old Li has made history by becoming the first player from China to win a Grand Slam singles title.

Latest Sport News from Monaco, France: Sebastian Vettel has won the Formula 1 Grand Prix in Monaco, France after an action packed race which had to be stopped just 6 laps from the end. Adrian Sutil hit the barriers on Lap 71 and suffered a puncture, Jaime Alguersuari hit the back of Lewis Hamilton and Vitaly Petrov tried to avoid the incident and hit the barriers. It’s believed that he was briefly knocked unconscious during this accident but came round shortly afterwards and has since complained of leg injuries. Doctors have confirmed that nothing was broken and he seems to be suffering from bruising but he has been taken to hospital for a full body scan and at present remains there under observation. Despite the race being over ¾ of the way through, it was decided to continue to run the last few laps once the track had been cleared following the incident.

Fernando Alonso finished in 2nd place and Jensen Button finished in 3rd place.

It was not such a good weekend for Lewis Hamilton who was given a penalty during qualifying and 2 penalties during the race for 2 separate incidents involving him.

During the qualifying session on Saturday, 21 year old Mexican,Sergio Perez, had a horrendous high speed crash as he hit the barriers following his exit from the tunnel. He suffered concussion and a sprained thigh and he was taken to hospital. He underwent a scan and was kept in overnight under observation. A spokesman for the Sauber team (who he races for) confirmed that he is to have another scan today and is to remain in hospital overnight tonight under further observation and will undergo a further scan tomorrow.

His accident happened just a short time after Nico Rosberg hit the barrier at the same spot but fortunately for Rosberg, his accident was not serious and he was able to take part in today’s race.

Sebastian Vettel is now leading the Drivers Championship with 143 points, Lewis Hamilton is 2^nd with 85 points and Mark Webber is 3^rd with 79 points.

Red Bull is leading the Constructors Championship with 222 points, McLaren is 2^nd with 161 points and Ferrari is 3^rd with 93 points.

Latest News of the 125 GP

16 year old Maverick Viñales has claimed his first race victory in the 125cc class at the Moto GP at Le Mans, France. He passed Nicholas Terol on the final lap after an exciting race-long battle with him. Efrén Vásquez finished in third place making it an all Spanish podium finish.

Viñales started his 4^th race of his 125 Moto GP career in third place on the front row of the grid and was the only rider to keep up with Terol throughout the race.

Terol is still leading the championships by 35 points from Sandro Cortese who is in 2^nd place.

The next race is in two weeks time in Barcelona.

Latest News of the Moto 2 GP

Marc Márquez has taken his first win in the Moto 2 category in his rookie season of the Moto GP in Le Mans, France. He started the race in 6^th position on the grid and managed to work his way up to win the race just under 2 seconds ahead of Yuki Takahashi. Stefan Bradl ( who had led the race from the start but was overtaken by Thomas Lüthi on the 15^th lap and was forced wide enabling Márquez through) eventually fnished in 3^rd place.

Stefan Bradl is still at the top of the championships 28 points ahead of his nearest rival Julián Simón.

Latest News of the Moto GP

Casey Stoner has claimed his first ever victory in the Moto GP at Le Mans, France in a comfortable win over second placed Andrea Dovizioso, with Valentino Rossi finishing in 3^rd place.

Dani Pedrosa had led the race for the first lap but was overtaken by his team-mate, Casey Stoner, on the next lap. They stayed close together until lap 17 when Pedrosa was overtaken by Marco Simoncelli. A controversial incident occurred when Pedrosa tried to regain his position and they touched and Pedrosa was sent crashing out of the race. It was later discovered that he had suffered a broken right collarbone.

After the incident, Simoncelli was issued with a drive-through penalty due to an alleged “illegal manoeuvre” and as a result he finished in 5^th position and lost his chance of getting his first ever podium finish in the Moto GP

Jorge Lorenzo is the current championship leader ahead of Casey Stoner by 12 points.

Latest Sport News: Vettel Wins Turkish Formula 1 Grand Prix

The Turkish Formula 1 Grand Prix was won today by Sebastian Vettel. It was his 3^rd win of the 2011 season and he led the race from start to finish. His team-mate, Mark Webber overtook Fernando Alonso (Ferrari) with just five laps to go and made it a one-two finish for the Red Bull team. Alonso’s 3^rd place finish was the first podium finish of the season for the Ferrari team.

Both British drivers, Lewis Hamilton and Jensen Button (McLaren team-mates) finished in 4^th and 6^th places respectively after overtaking each other several times during the race. "I don't remember drivers in the same team getting past each other so often without mistakes being made," commented David Coulthard, a BBC TV sport's commentator.

The Mercedes GP driver, Nico Rosberg finished in 5^th position, 7 places in front of his team-mate, 7 times former world champion Michael Schumacher who lost his front wing on the second lap after a coming together with Vitaly Petrov (Renault).

Britain’s only other driver, Paul Di Resta (Force India) was forced to retire from the race due to a problem with his car.

As a result of today’s race, Vettel is now leading the drivers championship with 93 points followed by Hamilton with 59 points. Webber is currently 3^rd with 55 points, Button is 4^th with 46 points and Alonso is 5^th with 41 points.

Red Bull are leading the constructors championship with 148 points followed by McLaren with 105 points and Ferrari in 3^rd place with 65 points.

The next race for the Formula 1 Grand Prix is due to take place in Spain in two weeks time.

A Sad Day For Sport-The News of Sir Henry Cooper's Passing

It was a sad day for sport to hear the news that Sir Henry Cooper, the Heavyweight boxing legend, died aged 76 on Sunday May 1^st at his son’s house in Oxted in Surrey.

He was born in London in 1934 and in 1952 at the age of 18 he appeared in the Helsinki Olympics. Both he and his twin brother George (who died last year) turned professional boxers at the age of 20.

Cooper’s most famous fight was in 1963 at Wembley when he knocked down Cassius Clay who was later to be known as Muhammad Ali. Cooper’s trademark left hook, known as “Enry’s Ammer” is what floored Ali in the fourth round of this fight but Ali eventually went on to win it.

Cooper, the former British, Commonwealth and European champion had a successful career and he actually fought 55 times in total although he never won a world title. He retired in 1971 at the age of 36 after he lost to Joe Bugner (another boxing legend), a year after he was named as the first person to become a two time winner of the BBC Sports Personality Of The Year Award.

After his retirement he had a successful career in TV as a pundit and also became a popular team captain on the BBC’s quiz show “A Question Of Sport”.

Upon hearing of the death of Sir Henry Cooper, Muhammad Ali said that he was “at a loss for words” over the death of his friend. "Henry always had a smile for me; a warm and embracing smile", he said. "It was always a pleasure being in Henry's company. I will miss my old friend. He was a great fighter and a gentleman."

Barry McGuigan, a former world featherweight champion from Ireland also paid tribute to Cooper. He told the BBC "He was a lovely fella, and I was a personal friend of him and his wife.

"It really is tragic news for the world of boxing. What a great man he was."

Sir Henry Cooper will not be forgotten and will always remain a true ambassador for the sport.

Latest News On The Speedway Grand Prix-A Sport That's Not For The Faint-Hearted

Motorcycle speedway is a sport commonly known as “Speedway” and is a form of motorcycle sport which consists of 4 riders racing 4 laps anti-clockwise on an oval track made of dirt or loosely packed shale. Typically the tracks are between 300-500 metres long. The bikes are of specialist design and run on a 500cc single cylinder engine, have only 1 gear and have no brakes. The riders are highly skilled and powerslide their machines sideways in order to navigate the bends. The riders have a metal plate on the base of their left boot and they put their left foot down as they go round the bend to help balance themselves and the metal plate allows the foot to slide across the surface. They reach speeds of approximately 70 miles per hour (110 km per hour) on the straight sections of the track.
A typical race consists of 4 riders, 2 from each team and the whole race from start to finish is normally about 1- 1 minute 30 seconds long.

Speedway, as a sport, originated in Maitland, New South Wales, Australia in the 1920’s but there are now both domestic and international competitions in many countries. It is most popular in central and northern Europe although it is quite popular in Australia and North America. The Federation Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM) is the controlling body for international speedway. The Speedway World Cup is one of the larger events which takes place each year. Top riders from 8 countries compete in 2 qualifying heats and the 2 winning teams are placed directly in the final. The 2^nd and 3^rd teams from each qualifying heat take part in a “race off” and the 2 winning teams join the other 2 teams that are already in the final. The winning team receives the World Cup Trophy.

There is also a Speedway Grand Prix series comprising of 11 meetings which are hosted in different countries.16 riders compete in this, 15 of which are regulars and the 16^th is a ”wild card” nomination. There are also 2 reserve riders at each meeting numbered 17 and 18. The rider accumulating the most points over the whole Grand Prix season is crowned the World Champion.

The 2011 Speedway Grand Prix season kicked off on Saturday 30^th April at Leszno, Poland. Three-times former world champion Nicki Pedersen scraped through into the semi finals and eventually went on to win the final ahead of defending World Champion Tomasz Gollob, Emil Sayfutdinov, and Jaroslaw Hampel. Pedersen admitted that he couldn’t have won if he hadn’t had the support of his team of mechanics behind him.

It wasn’t such good news for another three-times former world champion Jason Crump, who failed to reach even the semi finals. He admitted that his performance wasn’t up to scratch. He tried 3 different bikes during the event in the hope of getting the right set up but said that the choices he made were wrong and that he didn’t race well.
